Ex-footballer told police ‘I only had one pint’
Ex-Liverpool striker Dean Saunders was shot informing a law enforcement officer he had intoxicated “one pint” prior to declining to provide a breath test.
The BT Sport expert, 55, was later on imprisoned for 10 weeks for the offense prior to being released pending an appeal.
The officer who stopped Saunders informed him his driving was “godawful” prior to including: “You can’t even stand.”
Chester Magistrates’ Court heard he needed to prop himself up and was slurring his words as he left his Audi A8.
After being dropped in Boughton, Chester, in the early hours of 10 May, video footage shot by a body video camera tape-recorded an officer informing Saunders his driving was “godawful”.
When asked whether he had intoxicated alcohol, he informed the officer he had actually taken in “one pint” – holding up a single finger as he left his automobile.
In the custody suite of a police headquarters, the previous Wales footballer is seen asking an officer whether he was doing the “best thing” prior to firmly insisting: “I have not regularly declined to do anything.”
Police consistently inform Saunders he will be charged unless he consents to provide a sample.
However, Saunders continues to ask the officers whether he can wait to speak with his lawyer prior to the breath test.
At the magistrates’ court on Wednesday, Saunders, of The Paddocks in Whitegate, Cheshire, stated he had actually been at Chester Races and had intoxicated 2 pints the eve his automobile was stopped.
His attorney recommended the alcohol may have “connected” with the medication he considers injury to his knees and for his asthma.

Saunders invested one night in jail and was released after his legal representatives made a bail application in personal on Thursday.
His lawyer Conor Johnstone stated: “Clearly, he will be eased.”
The appeal versus his sentence will be held at Chester Crown Court next month.
