Mississippi Department of Corrections asks FBI to help investigate 15 inmate deaths

(CNN)The head of the Mississippi Department of Corrections is now asking the FBI to assist examine the deaths of 15 prisoners who passed away in August.

Earlier today, details was launched stating 12 detainees had actually passed away while in custody . 2 more prisoners were contributed to that list Thursday and another was included Friday, bringing the overall to 15 deaths.
“While our company believe that the majority of the reported deaths throughout the month of August are from diseases or natural causes, such as cancer and heart problem, based upon offered details, we are looking for help from others outside the department in the interest of openness,” Hall stated in her declaration.
      Hall stated Tuesday “the variety of deaths the department is reporting is not out of line with the variety of deaths in previous months.” The current DOC figures revealed 47 prisoners passed away in 2015, 53 passed away in 2014 and 71 in 2013.
      Hall stated in a Tuesday declaration that the state’s prisoner population– 19,425 since Tuesday– makes up “individuals from all strolls of life and with all kinds of pre-existing conditions.”
      Reports from CNN affiliates recommend that a minimum of one prisoner did not pass away from natural causes.
      According to The Clarion-Ledger and DOC, 5 of the dead detainees were from Central Mississippi Correctional Facility, 3 were from the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, 5 were from South Mississippi Correctional Institution and one was from Wilkinson County Correctional Facility. It is unidentified where among the prisoners was being held.
      Of the 15 prisoners, one passed away in jail and 9 passed away at a healthcare facility. It is unidentified where 5 of the detainees passed away.
      The cause of death for each of the 15 prisoners is pending the outcomes of an autopsy.
