Six coins in a World War I soldier’s pocket got him discovered and shot. They also saved his life.

(CNN)Optatius Buyssens was a Belgian soldier who battled the Germans throughout World War I.

Vincent Buyssens, who resides in Antwerp, stated the coins stopped a bullet and conserved his great-grandfather’s life. He published a photo of the 3 Belgian francs and 3 French francs on Reddit.
“Ironically, the coins were the reason that he got shot,” Buyssens stated. “It was the sound of them sticking together in his breast pocket which offered his position away.”

“He was really fortunate considering that the bullet that needs to have eliminated him ricocheted off of the coins, hence conserving his life,” Vincent Buyssens informed CNN.
He stated it wasn’t till just recently that he found the entire story about the coins in a journal kept by his great-grandfather’s bro, who was a devoted archivist. Buyssens stated he got pictures of the journal from a regional museum.
